In the winter, particularly in the north, the air gets dry and if you are outside at all at this time your fingers can get pretty dry. In the midwest, one only has to be outside for a short while in the winter for your hands to get dry and cracked. Drinking lots of water helps but some of us need more help than that.
One of the primary qualities of calendula is that is absorbs and retains moisture. (Something that does this is called a humectant.) So, if you use a cream or ointment that contains calendula it will help prevent the skin on your hands from getting so dry and cracked. It also has antibacterial properties allowing splits around the cuticles to close up more quickly. You may need to use a cream like this several times a day to clear up a split cuticle or splits on the ends of your fingers but once cleared up you won't need it nearly so often.
