If your acne isn't too terrible a very simple way of improving your skin is this:
Wash your face with warm water and soap and once you have rinsed it well with warm water rinse again with cold water. The warm water opens the pores and cleans them out and the cold water closes them up again. This can be easily done a couple of times a day. Don't use a disinfectant soap.

I have also noticed that swimming in salt water can make a big difference.
I spent most of my teen years competitive swimming and had very little problem with acne. Very likely a combination of the exercise and the wonderful chemicals they put in the pool.
The above are a couple of solutions that be used without putting strange chemicals on your skin or into your body.
